Famous Americans and Georgetown

Over our 300 year history, Georgetown has been visited by Presidents of the United States, foreign dignitaries, and personalities readily recognized in American History. Among the items on display you will see the names of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, and Bernard Baruch, wealthy South Carolinian and Georgetown plantation resident, who was FDR’s financial advisor.

General Francis Marion, better known as the Swamp Fox during the Revolutionary War, was reared here and we have several items dating from that time, including a musket bearing a silver fox imbedded in the handle and an original letter of General Marion to General Nathaniel Greene.

 
 
 
The Marquis de Lafayette and his friend the German Baron de Kalb arrived in the colonies on June 13, 1777 and they landed near Georgetown. On display is the story of their arrival.

 

Mr. Thomas Lynch, Jr. was an indigo planter on the North Santee River. Upon hearing of the ill health of his father in Philadelphia, who was attending the Second Continental Congress he hastened to his side, and was elected to fill the seat of  his father and thus became a signer of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.
